The owner treats staff poorly, does not pay for training, nor does he pay overtime or vacation to his employees. Many of the products sold here are past their expiry. For example, the Icepresso and chillate contain dairy; the icepresso guidelines state that unused product should be thrown away at the end of each night, yet the owner insists that the same batch is sold and combined with fresh batches for weeks on end because he wants to save money. He also penalizes employees if they try to follow health codes, so eventually a good willed staff member must secretly throw out expired product, risking penalization. I share this from personal experience as a former employee. I quit because of workplace harassment (which was actually encouraged by Sam, the owner, in an attempt to manipulate me into obedience) and because I witnessed many people become ill after consuming expired product this café sold. I was not paid in full for my last two weeks of work. I was not paid my accumulated vacation pay. The owner also falsified my record of employment. This café receives such a high rating because the clientele is FANTASTIC and the staff are an eclectic and caring group of people, indeed creating a nice atmosphere. The owner's wife is also a wonderful woman who takes good care of her patrons. However, several people have quit because of the reasons I have stated. If the village truly values the remaining staff who takes such good care of them and treats them with such kindness, they should speak out and take action against the owner and his misguided business practices. |
